Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-pathogenic probiotic yeast which has been well-studied for its use in the prevention of gastrointestinal disturbances often associated with the use of antibiotics, especially those GI disorders resulting from a history of antibiotic use. S. boulardii has been used in clinical trials in patients with irritable bowel disorders. It has been found to exert many beneficial effects and acts in two principal probiotic ways: first by inhibiting some bacterial toxins or their effects; and secondly by having direct effects on the intestinal mucosa. S. boulardii is particularly effective with parasitic issues such as C. difficile, if discovered residing in the colon with gastrointestinal health panels.
