The most recent variation developed in our ever evolving hobby is the Snow White Pleco. These solid White Bushynose, or Bristlenose plecos feature a solid white body – all the way to the small bristles on the nose. These plecos just get better as they grow.
Reaching a manageable adult length of 4 to 5 inches (10-13 cm), this species stays significantly smaller than common plecostomus varieties. Mature males develop a dense, dramatic bushy display of soft facial tentacles or “bristles” across their snout, while females remain sleek with minimal to no bristles along the jawline. Because of its compact adult footprint and peaceful demeanor, a single Snow White L-144 thrives in a minimum aquarium size of 20 to 30 gallons.
The Snow White L-144 Bushynose Pleco is a highly energetic, peaceful grazer that excels at controlling algae growth on aquarium glass, rocks, and decor. Its luminous white coloration creates an unforgettable, glowing contrast when set against dark substrates, driftwood, and vibrant green aquascapes.
Diet & Compatibility:
Diet: This species is a dedicated Herbivore and Detritivore. Its primary diet should consist of spirulina wafers, algae disks, high-quality herbivore pellets, and fresh blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, yellow squash, and spinach. Protein-heavy foods should be offered sparingly to prevent bloating or digestive distress.
Wood Requirement: Access to natural driftwood is mandatory for long-term health. The fibers obtained from rasping on wood supply vital roughage for their specialized digestive system while fostering beneficial biofilm.
Reef / Plant Compatibility: It is Completely Plant Safe. The Snow White L-144 gently cleans algae off leaf surfaces without damaging plant foliage, stem structures, or root systems, making it an ideal inhabitant for planted setups.
Temperament: It is Peaceful. It is entirely non-aggressive toward midwater and surface fish. Males may display minor territorial squabbles over prime breeding caves or feeding zones when housed with other male Ancistrus, but this is easily managed by providing ample hideouts.
Tankmates: Excellent tankmates include small to medium community species such as Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, Danios, Guppies, Angelfish, Discus, and Dwarf Cichlids. They are also fully compatible with freshwater dwarf shrimp and ornamental snails.
